Ever since I started visiting Higashikawa-town – located at the foot of Mt. Asahidake, the highest mountain in Hokkaido -, Yumoto Yukoman-so in Asahidake Onsen has been one of my favorite places to stay, whether as an overnight stay or a day trip. The tepid water of the sulfate hot spring feels really good, and since I am used to coming here many times, I often fall asleep :). I always look forward to the dinner called “Yushoku-zen” when I stay there.

Horoka Onsen – Kanoya
A friend of mine, who is interesting in many ways and also a hot spring sommelier, recommended me to visit Horoka Onsen once. In fact, almost all the hot springs he recommended me previously made me always very happy. And surprisingly he told me that he had lived in this Horoka Onsen for a while and told me some amazing stories there. For example, the indoor bath is for unisex even today, and this onsen is managed by a very old lady all by herself.

I have climbed Mt. Asahidake several times with my kid since he was small. However, it was always the round trip from Sugatami station to Mt.Asahidake, considering the pace, physical strength of my kid and the fact that it was a day trip. Therefore, I had never been to the “other side” of Mt. Asahidake. Today, since I was the only one who came to Higashikawa town, I decided to take this circular course.

After enjoying summer skiing at the Engaru Rock Valley Ski Resort, I went to Maure villa to enjoy hot spring at Pokke-no-yu. When I searched the hot spring around the ski resort, I just simply thought this wooden building looked great, so I didn’t investigate what types of hot spring they have. However to my surprise, Pokke-no-yu has characteristic hot spring, which made my skin very smooth. Yes, it was a nice alkaline simple spring.

I was looking for a good hot spring near Higashikawa town where I was staying. And I heard that there was a carbonated spring that tasted like cider in Aibetsu town relatively close to Higashikawa. I decided to take a day trip to Yumoto Kyowa Onsen this time. However it is famous for its mushroom dishes so I want to stay here next time.

After getting off at the Fukagawa-Nishi interchange, I drove towards the Uryunuma wetland. After a while, the name of the place “Moseushi” and the signboard of an unusual hot spring called “Peperu” caught my attention. So I was thinking about visiting here if there was no other hot spring on my way back from hiking in the Uryunuma wetland. The hiking was really wonderful, but it was bit cold from the rain. So I headed to Peperu to enjoy hot spring.

I hadn’t been able to come to Biei for a while because of COVID-19. After arriving at the airport and having a delicious lunch in Higashikawa town, I headed to the Aoi-ike. I was surprised to see that they built a spacious and clean parking lot since then. I guess it has become a famous tourist spot.
Continue readingYunokawa Onsen – Bourou Noguchi Hakodate
When it comes to hot springs in Hakodate, Yunokawa Onsen is a must-visit. This time, we stayed in a spacious 120m² maisonette suite. To be honest, it didn’t seem like the kind of place families with young kid would typically stay. However, our kid absolutely loved the large space and the unique two-story design. With a private onsen in the suite, it turned out to be a great choice for a relaxing family getaway.
Continue readingKaminoyu Onsen – Ginkonyu
I had heard so much about Ginkonyu from my hot spring-loving friends, and I had always wanted to visit. This summer, while staying in my usual spot in Higashikawa, Hokkaido, I decided to stop by on my way back to Tokyo via Hakodate. The expansive property is home to several unique open-air baths, each offering a distinctive experience.
