Tsurumaki Onsen: Kobo no Sato-yu

Tsurumaki Onsen is just about an hour from Shinjuku on the Odakyu Line, making it the perfect spot for those spontaneous “I need a soak!” moments that hit you in the early afternoon. Known for its high calcium content, the water here is a slightly alkaline calcium/sodium chloride spring that’s believed to have great healing properties.

Hakone & Izu

I traveled through Hakone and Izu from January 4th to 7th. The theme this time was staying at inns with historical architecture. Our first stop was the Fujiya Hotel in Hakone Miyanoshita—a classic hotel founded in 1878, famous for its grand architecture and beautiful Japanese garden. The bellboy shared some fun stories on the way to our room, and it was funny to hear that the “new wing” we were staying in was actually built back in 1963!

Yugashima Onsen: Ochairou Murakami

Ochairou Murakami is a traditional ryokan in Yugashima Onsen. The building is a designated Tangible Cultural Property, and right from the entrance, you’re greeted by a striking plum blossom-shaped decoration. The walk to the rooms along the hallways, with views of the elegant garden, is incredibly peaceful and relaxing.
