Hachijojima is a tropical island that hardly feels like part of Tokyo, even though it technically is. Surprisingly, the island has seven hot springs. One of them is Sueyoshi Onsen, located on a high plateau at the southern foot of Mt. Mihara, on the southern side of the gourd-shaped island.
On a hot summer day, you might wonder, “A hot spring in this heat?” But with the refreshing sea breeze, it actually feels quite nice.

Since the hot spring is on a high plateau, you can enjoy a view of the sea. There are two open-air baths, and from the one that was the men’s bath that day, I could see Hachijojima Lighthouse. On the other hand, the women’s bath overlooked the port, and I heard the view from there was absolutely stunning.
The water was a greenish-brown color and, perhaps because of its proximity to the sea, was quite salty. It even had a bit of a broth-like taste, which was oddly enjoyable :) Since the water was very warming, I spent some time afterward relaxing in the tatami-floored rest area, gazing at the ocean.
