[Webpage] Onsen Ryokan Marumo (Japanese)

I had some family matters to attend to in Tottori. Normally, I would extend my visit to enjoy the radium springs at Misasa Onsen, but this time I arrived late due to work and had early commitments the next day. Therefore, I decided to look for accommodations near Tottori station. I had known that there was a hot spring nearby, but since there are many nice onsen options around Tottori, I hadn’t done any thorough research. However, I found out that Marumo Ryokan offers a flow of natural hot spring water right in the town center, and I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere that sets it apart from typical business hotels. They also offered govermental travel support, so I decided to stay here.

The ryokan has a structure that surrounds a central garden like a masu (a square wooden box), likely a result of renovations, as there are both older and remodeled parts. The rooms and common areas have a modern Japanese vibe. What surprised me the most was the hot spring water. The onsen water is sodium sulfate and chloride spring, and the total mineral content is quite high at 4.436g/kg. Additionally, despite being in the city, the spring water temperature is 52.6 degrees Celsius, and I was thrilled to find that the large bathtub is continuously fed with fresh spring water, allowing for overnight soaking. When I ran my hand through the water, it felt slightly slippery, and tasting it revealed a robust flavor reminiscent of dashi (broth). The hot water left me feeling refreshed after soaking, and being a chloride spring, it provided excellent warmth.

The changing room, generously made of wood, was very pleasant, with towels featuring the hot spring symbol provided. The bath also has large windows that allow you to relax and enjoy greenery even in the city. There is also a family bath available without reservation, and I was genuinely surprised to find such a tranquil and excellent hot spring just a few minutes from the bustling entertainment district. I was so impressed that I will definitely choose this ryokan again if I find myself short on time in the future.
