Yunohanazawa Onsen is the highest hot spring in the Hakone area. I heard they have milky-white simple sulfur water, so I decided to go a little out of my way to check it out. The hotel is about a 5-minute drive into the mountains from Ashinoyu. Even though I was just visiting for the day, I was so happy they came to pick me up at the Ashinoyu bus stop. When the shuttle bus arrived with the Prince Hotel logo on it, that’s when I first realized it was part of the Prince hotel group.

The open-air bath is a beautiful pale blue-white simple sulfur spring. There’s just something about that sulfur scent and the cloudy water that makes you feel like you’ve really arrived. While the hot water is free-flowing and quite warm, it feels very soft on the skin. I found myself staying in for a long time, alternating between soaking and cooling off.

The indoor bath is clear, but it has a faint sulfur aroma, so they might be filtering the water. Either way, the indoor bath warms you up nicely too. It might lack a bit of traditional “onsen atmosphere,” but the washing area has individual booths for privacy and the whole place feels clean, which is nice.
