When thinking of skiing in Niseko, Hirafu and Annupuri are the go-to spots. However, for families with small children, I’d recommend Moiwa Ski Resort, which is slightly removed from the more popular areas. This smaller ski resort features just three lifts, but it offers a good variety of beginner to intermediate courses that children can enjoy. The resort is also pleasantly uncrowded. Conveniently located next to Moiwa Ski Resort is ONE NISEKO RESORT TOWERS, a hotel designed by Kengo Kuma, with an impressive entrance façade that incorporates plenty of wood.

The drive from New Chitose Airport to Niseko takes about two hours along Route 276. The journey includes stunning views of Lake Shikotsu and, as you approach Niseko, the majestic Mount Yotei. It’s a delightful way to start our Niseko adventure.

The rooms at ONE NISEKO RESORT TOWERS are spacious and equipped with a kitchenette and refrigerator, making them ideal for long stays. The on-site store even sells items like pasta and sauces, so you can prepare a quick meal after returning from the slopes. From the higher floors, guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the Niseko area.

The hotel’s restaurant, Tura, is a bit small for the size of the property. However, the delicious meals served there make it a convenient choice, especially after a tiring day of skiing. For those looking to explore more dining options, the Hirafu area is a short drive away, offering a wide range of excellent restaurants.

Moiwa Ski Resort is almost deserted by late afternoon, with no lines at the lifts and wide-open slopes. A highlight is that you can ski directly back to the hotel. (Reaching the ski resort from the hotel by skiing, however, might be a challenge due to the slope incline.)

Annupuri Ski Resort is another family-friendly option, offering expansive slopes and beginner-friendly courses. It also hosts various seasonal events for kids, such as a potato-digging contest in the snow! My children had a blast digging out the potatoes, which we later turned into a curry meal back at the hotel.

The onsen at ONE NISEKO RESORT TOWERS uses water from the Niseko Moiwa Onsen source, a sodium bicarbonate and chloride spring similar to the famous Niseko Konbu Onsen nearby. The facility features a spacious indoor bath and a semi-open-air bath, where you can soak while admiring the snowy landscape. The greenish-brown water is incredibly warming and perfect for relieving post-ski fatigue.

One of our favorite experiences in Niseko is dining at the restaurant operated by the renowned tea brand Lupicia. They offer delicious dishes for both adults and children. On this trip, we enjoyed exquisite lamb dishes and freshly baked bread, complemented by a well-curated selection of appetizers.

For families, Niseko is not just about skiing; it’s also about exploring the numerous hot springs in the area. While the hotel’s onsen is excellent on its own, the surrounding hot springs offer additional opportunities to relax and unwind. With great accommodations, friendly ski resorts, and fantastic dining options, Niseko is a perfect destination for a winter family trip.
