The indoor bath features a magnificent tile mural of Hagoromo Falls, as seen in the photo, while the open-air bath offers snowy scenery at this time of year—though I did find myself wishing the walls were a bit lower.

The hot spring at Tenninkyo is, as you can see, a striking greenish-brown cloudy water. From this color and the mineral deposits coating the floor, it already feels like a promising onsen. The spring quality is a sodium–calcium–magnesium sulfate–bicarbonate–chloride spring, with a total mineral content of 2,298 mg/kg and a pH of 6.8. When rubbing the water on my skin, it had a slightly squeaky, resistant feel. Given the color, I expected a strong iron presence, but surprisingly there was no noticeable taste or smell. The source temperature is 44°C, making the indoor bath a bit on the hot side, while the outdoor bath—perhaps thanks to the cold air—was just right. That day, low clouds hung overhead, and with snow covering the rocks and trees, the scenery felt exactly like a monochrome ink painting.

A strangely surreal view where Shikishimaso seems to be the only place with any color.

As you can see, the world that day was truly black and white, with the only sound being the flowing river.
